About This Item

London: S.P.C.K., 1956. First edition. Octavo, brown cloth, pp. xi, 151; illustrated. From the foreword, " Joanna Southcott, a devout Devonshire Church-woman at the end of the eighteenth century, honestly believed that God was calling her to be a prophetess. A small group of Anglican clergy welcomed in her the restoration of the lost Order of Prophets, and thousands of layfolk became her disciples". The text abounds with descriptions of weird eccentrics, and their doings. Several light spots of foxing on fore-edge of pages, else a very good copy. No dust jacket..
