Inscribed on the front free fly leaf by the author in the year of publication: "To / Dick Alexander, / An item for the collection, with a ho-ho- / ho and the old rebel yell / Jim Cain / Santa Monica, Calif / April 27, 1946. Faint offsetting to the front endpapers, else a fine bright copy in a near fine dust jacket lightly toned on the spine and with light wear to the top edge and corner of the front cover. Cain's only historical novel about a love affair between a Confederate spy and a prostitute in a mining camp.A Confederate spy in the mining town of Virginia City, a prostitute, and the spy's desperate struggle to possess her - at all cost.
