Ten of the essays are on individual authors, including Emerson, Stevenson, Trollope; the last one is "The Art of Fiction" - still an influential treatment. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy. Maroon cloth binding, ruled on the covers, with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 408 pages followed by a six-page catalong. Lightly bumped with some rubbing at the margins. . Reprint Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
Synopsis
Partial Portraits is a book of literary criticism by Henry James published in 1888. The book collected essays that James had written over the preceding decade, mostly on English and American writers. But the book also offered interesting treatments of Alphonse Daudet, Guy de Maupassant and Ivan Turgenev. Perhaps the most important essay was The Art of Fiction, James' brilliant plea for the widest possible freedom in content and technique in narrative fiction.
