About This Item

Paris, Léon Vanier, 1889.

8vo [183 x 120 mm] of (1) bl. l., (3) ll., 116 pp., two formerly bent corners. Half bookbinder's cloth bradel's style, smooth back, printed covers preserved. Binding signed G. Rouner.

First edition, printed at 500 copies, of "the last important work of 'poor Lelian'".

"A collection of poetry by Paul Verlaine (1844-1896). Published in 1889, it is the last important work of 'poor Lélian'. It is made up of pieces written at various times. Some poems from his youth, others written in Mons prison and taken from the manuscript of Cellulairement, which was never published, and finally compositions inspired by sentimental and sexual episodes, normal or otherwise (1885-1888). If eroticism seems to be the link that presided over the composition of 'Parallèlement' and avoids - rather badly - a chaotic appearance, one may wonder about the author's intention in exhuming and pasting together pieces that were already twenty years old and that had appeared in various magazines or remained in manuscript form. In his own words, 'he pretends to communicate with the devil'; he wants to give 'a collection in verse of the most sincere, but very daring feelings'. [...] One can see in it a work entirely dominated by sensuality, 'parallel' to the mysticism of 'Wisdom' and 'Love', or an evocation of the poet's 'parallel' loves, a manifestation of his two currents of inspiration, Arthur the infernal companion, Matilda the legitimate wife. Dating from very different periods of Verlaine's life, these poems give a general indication of his poetic talent. The influence of Baudelaire is apparent, as is that of slang and colloquial style elsewhere...". (Dictionnaire des Œuvres, V, 123).

A precious copy bound with the contemporary covers preserved.
