First edition. Inscribed by Cardozo on the front endpaper "To The American Jewish Historical Society from Benjamin N. Cardozo." Rectangular ghost from old label on front cover but still a bright and sharp copy with several ex-library markings (embossed and stamped) from The American Jewish Historical Society; the green printed dust wrapper presents very well with minor chipping at corners of folds, neatly re-enforced with archival tape inside.<br/> <br/> An inscribed first edition of the supreme court jurist's third book; one of his more important works.<br/> <br/>
