About This Item
Singapore: André Publications,, 1970. The 1970 edition, scarce institutionally and in commerce, of Papineau's colourful guide to Hong Kong, pleasingly with the maps in excellent condition and still retaining the original promotional bookmark for C. K. Tang, "Singapore's treasure house of old world loveliness". WorldCat records just two copies in the United States and one in Australia. By the 1960s, Hong Kong had taken its place among the world's premier holiday destinations. Like Papineau's long-running guide to Singapore, the present example combines a lively style with recommendations to fit a range of tastes and budgets. Adverts for the Mandarin Hotel ("if you order breakfast at 3 a.m., we don't ask why"), the jewellers Lane Crawford, and multiple fur dealers speak to the increasingly lucrative nature of the Asia tourist market as middle-class westerners sought the escapist high of international travel. Octavo. Original laminated illustrated card wrappers, spine lettered in gilt and yellow, title on front cover in yellow and white. With maps of Kowloon and Victoria unfolding to 410 x 357 mm and 390 x 357 mm, full-page map of Hong Kong region, promotional bookmark tipped-in as issued, illustrations and advertisements throughout. Contemporary black pen underlining of 4 words on p. 99. Wrappers bright with light rubbing and creasing, occasional creasing to fore-edges and corners internally, losses to lower corners of pp. 99-101, maps bright without tears, bookmark creased at foot. A very good copy. Institutional copies: University of Michigan; Ohio University; University of Newcastle.
