By the 1960s, Hong Kong had taken its place among the world's premier holiday destinations. Like Papineau's long-running guide to Singapore, the present example combines a lively style with recommendations to fit a range of tastes and budgets. Adverts for the Mandarin Hotel ("if you order breakfast at 3 a.m., we don't ask why"), the jewellers Lane Crawford, and multiple fur dealers speak to the increasingly lucrative nature of the Asia tourist market as middle-class westerners sought the escapist high of international travel.
