About This Item

A Paris: de l'Imprimerie de Firmin Didot, Imprimeur de Roi, rue Jacob, No. 24, 1825. First edition. Unbound as published. Wrapped into publisher's, blue printed wrappers. First edition. Unbound as published. Wrapped into publisher's, blue printed wrappers. [84] hand colored lithographs and the related text pages. Unbound.

A scarce copy of Champollion's richly illustrated, hand-colored Panthéon Égyptien.

Champollion's Panthéon Égyptien was originally published in a sequel of fifteen livraisons, the main part between 1823 and 1825, in different versions, therefore the structure and the content differ in most copies. The illustrations were made and vividly watercolored by Léon-Jean-Joseph Dubois (illustrator and lithographer, also an archaeologist and curator at the Louvre museum), and eventually, 90 plates were published out of the 200 planned by Champollion. The plates of divine representations are accompanied by a legend in hieroglyphs and sometimes in hieratic script. In the corresponding text, Champollion offers the translations of the various names of the deities, an analysis of their respective roles, and provides references to classical authors and Greco-Latin mythology.

Our copy, with 84 plates, is one of the most complete one we could trace. We consulted the Lyon-copy (Rés 133145) which contains only 72 images and the two BnF copies (4-O3a-233; Arsenal 4-H-7617), of which one is incomplete and both lacks text leaves which our copy includes.
