About This Item
London: E Bumpus and George Bell, 1890-3. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. 10" by 8". None. Four plays by Robert Bridges from the Bumpus series of plays. Volumes ii, iii, v and vi of the Robert Bridges play series. First editions from this series. Printed on Van Gelder paper, watermarks most visible to the title pages of Humours of the Court and Palicio and to page 77 of Return of Ulysses and page 136 of Achilles in Scyros. In original paper wraps. Pagination is continual throughout the series, collated complete. No date to Humours of the Court, dated from copac. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Robert Bridges was a doctor by training and only achieved literary fame later in his life. His main work was poetry which is why his plays were in verse. However, his plays had limited success in comparison to his poetry. In original paper wraps. Externally, generally smart. Some chipping to extremities, particularly to Return of Ulysses. Small spill to front cover of Achilles in Scyros. Small hole to front cover of Humours of The Court. Textblock for Palicio is disbound from covers. Internally, all are firmly bound. Van Gelder watermark to paper. Pages are generally bright with some light foxing throughout Achilles, to the first half of Return of Ulysses. Instances of the odd spot throughout Palicio and Humours of the Court. Very Good
