About This Item
New York: The Free Press/Macmillan, 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Type: Remainder First Edition First Printing Hardcover Book and Dust Jacket As New. Remaindered. Six maps. Two sections of photographic illustrations. Jacket with wrap-around painting; Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, 1859, by Edward Lear. Dark green cloth binding with bright and bold gilt titles to spine, tight and solid binding, internals spotless, as new. This is the story of an agrarian society, ruled for centuries by outside powers, whose historical experience has been overwhelmingly negative. Kimmerling and Migdal give a sensitive and detailed portrait of this society as it struggled to survive the dissipation of the Ottoman Empire, the devastation of World War I, the transfer to British authority, and the subsequent destabilizing impact of Western economies. The first Zionist settlement of 1870 and the Balfor Declaration of 1917 went almost unnoticed by them. But Jewish settlers became a growing presence in Palestine. Their interaction with the Jewish people and the Israeli state over time is closely documented. They discuss more recent events and explore what the future might hold for them as a people. xix, 396 pages. Chronological List of Major Events in Palestinian History, Notes, Index. 9.7 x 6.5 inches. 1993, The Free Press/Macmillan, New York.
