New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1873. First US Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. 12mo, 390 pages. In Fair condition. Quarter bound in brown leather with marbled paper boards. Boards have faint writing in ink on spine, large tear on spine, heavy rubbing to corner and along edges, and moderate shelfwear. Textblock lacking pages 3-8, owner's inscription on front endpaper, stamp on front endpaper, mild foxing to many pages, splitting to gutter between verso of title page and page 1, writing in pencil on bottom margin of pages 162-163, and partial splitting to rear interior hinge. Synopsis
A Pair of Blue Eyes is a novel by Thomas Hardy, published in 1873. The book describes the love triangle among a young woman, Elfride Swancourt, and her two suitors from very different backgrounds. Stephen Smith is a socially inferior but ambitious young man who adores her and with whom she shares a country background. Henry Knight is the respectable, established, older man who represents London society.
