First children's book by the woman who would become known as the mother of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, written while her husband was serving as ambassador to Mexico. The lovely story of a brother & sister & painted clay pig bank is brought to life with the colorful illustrations of artist René d'Harnoncourt, who had recently curated an exhibition of Mexican art at the New York Met. 34 pp, illustrated on alternate pages, decorative endpapers. Orig. published in 1930, this is the Ninth printing of that FIRST EDITION from Jan. 1945. Hardcover 4to has bright red cloth-covered boards lettered in black to front & spine. Condition is VG: generally very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages creamy white with moderate, age-appropriate tanning to edges, colors bright. Former owner's name to twice to front endpapers, else unmarked. Boards show slight rubbing to extremities, mild faded spots to rear board, slightly pushed spine & bumped corners. The unclipped DJ is Fair-Good, with missing chips, creasing, light soil; nicely protected in new mylar cover Free!
