London:: Oxford at the Clarendon Press, 1930.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: navy blue cloth with gilt spine text; a Good book, no dust jacket.. 8vo (about 8 inches tall) . Index. Map endpapers (rear only). Description: Well illustrated in black and white. Following taken from the author's foreword (1929): ''Like one of its own typhoons, a great change is sweeping across the Pacific Basin. The old order of hermit counties and uninhabited islands has gone for ever. The new régime of competition, by placing a premium on utility, has forced these islands into the world economy. Competition, however, means rivalry; and all round the Pacific the nations are regarding one another with suspicion. East and west of the great ocean are English speaking peoples who, though obsessed by the problems of their own settlement, are conscious of duties to native races for whose welfare they consider themselves responsible. For the English speaking peoples and the native races alike peaceful development of the whole Basin depends upon knowledge of the characteristics of the regions within it, its natural resources, and its inhabitants. This geographical study, designed to give that knowledge, will fulfill my earnest hope if also it enables the dwellers of the Basin, by means of an enlarged ability to interpret the facts of their environment, to sense the overwhelming need for co-operation and intelligent foresight in planning for the future.'' The author was Senior Lecturer in Economics and Economic Geography in the University of Melbourne.
