Top+fore-edges though lightly aged/toned are generally bright and surprisingly - clear of foxing/spotting though ther is one small blemish on top edges; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, appears unread apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright,clean,sharp-cornered original plain green cloth boards with corresponding sunning areas wher dw/dj damaged or missing, i.e. head+foot of spine, corner tips and edges; bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip and plain white endpapers with very minimal foxing. UK,8vo HB +dw/dj,1st edn,7-256pp [paginated] includes author Introduction,15 chapters and appendices (3) - University Match results 1871/2 to 1950/1.Oxford Blues and Cambridge Blues; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, Acknowledgement author to Editor of TheDaily Telegraph for use of reports of Oxford v. Cambridge matches for 1930-38. In spite of the exterior appearance of the GOOD dw/dj, internally, the book is in an acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 70+ year-old age.It is only the exterior faults that prevents a slightly higher grading overall.Despite them,it really is still a more than acceptable example for its age,and for its historical content. OXFORD v. CAMBRIDGE is the first complete and comprehensive story of the 'Varsity match. It begins in the days when the teams were twenty a side, when they walked a mile or so to a ground to play before a handful of spectators, and goes on to the great sporting occasion of our own times at Twickenham before 60,000 people. 'Oxford v. Cambridge',however,is no mere catalogue of games and players, although these are described and discussed in detail.Howard Marshall, with the assistance of Colonel J. P. Jordan (rugby football correspondent of the Daily Telegraph) shows how much the game in general owes to 'Varsity football. He examines the tactics of almost every match played between the two.He shows how these tactics have changed and developed over the years, and how they have influenced rigbyfootball throughout the country. With a keen, critical and expert pen he gives fascinating and authoritative portraits of some of the great tacticians and personalities. The critical tactical study, the analysis of great players, together with invaluable appendices, make 'Oxford v. Cambridge' a book for every rugger enthusiast and a distinguished contribution to sporting literature. Played 69 matches.Oxford won 32,Cambridge 26 and 11 were drawn. No matches played 1940-45 Howard Marshall, author, sports journalist and B.B.C. commentator, was educated at Haileybury, and gained his Blue as a second row forward against Cambridge in 1922. Colonel J.P. Jordan,O.B.E.,M.C.,educated at Dulwich and Oxford, has been an authority on the game for thirty years. He has reported over two hundred International matches, and has watched every 'Varsity match (except four) since 1898.
