Hardcover, original stamped brown cloth boards with gilt text on spine. Front board is detached and spine has chipping and cracks present. Despite the rough exterior the internal binding of the text pages is good though rear hinge is cracked at both the board in the beginning of the rear end pages. Paper is toned due to age and spotting and foxing is present. One of the rear end pages has the lower outside corner missing, this tear measures several inches. The rear pastedown has a number 81.154 written in pencil in several of the pages as pencil lines lightly written outside of the text area where somebody marked some key paragraphs. The book appears otherwise complete, good copy for reading or reference. Title page states third edition.

[4], vi, [1], 8-374, [4] pp. Brown cloth with decorations in gilt on the boards and spine, spine lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. A Very Good+ book with minor wear to the extremities and an 1852 Christmas gift inscription written on the free front endpaper.

Hardcover green and cream ivory boards. Portland Edition. Pages are toned. Previous owner's name penciled inside cover. Good, readable copy. 364 pages 4 3/8" x 6 3/8". Book will be well wrapped and shipped in a box.

Inscribed "Mrs. Yale, From the Author with his best regards. October 1846." A few pages with contemporary pencil marks. Straight and sound, but gently rubbed and spotted, with wear to extremities, internally foxed, lacking rear endpaper: only Very Good. Longfellow's first major work, a prose collection inspired by his overseas travel. Portions were published in 1833 and 1834, and the complete work in 1835; this is the first Ticknor edition.
