London: Chapman and Hall, 1872 second edition. xvi and 175 pages. Text diagrams. Contemporary calf. Francois Jarry, an officer of the Prussian army under Frederick the Great, went to England after the battle of Jena and became commandant of the Royal Military College. After serving in Africa and India, William Napier became commandant of the Staff College in 1861.The two other treatises printed in this book - on military reconnaissance by Napier and on road building by Major J Pitt Kennedy - were also compiled for use by students of the Staff College.
