At the age of 14, her family moved from Melbourne to Mataranka, a small isolated town in the Northern Territory. In her early 20s, Mary met and fell in love with Joe Groves. They had four children and led an exciting and challenging life managing and owning an array of cattle stations. Mary states that she has not used real names in these stories, and the terminology is that of the 60s and 70s, and some remarks may seem sexist or racist - they are not intended to be derogatory, but were terms used in the Territory in her time there.
