About This Item

Self Published. Near Fine. 1913. First Edition Thus. Pamphlet. Fine except for a little waviness from the glue used to adhere the photo to the inside front cover. Includes the original unprinted envelope. ; Real photo frontis of Riley. Signed with his monogram on the first page in pencil. From "A Bibliography of James Whitcomb Riley" by Anthony J. Russo page 99: "A facsimile of the manuscript of the poem appeared in a pamphlet, published December, 1912. It can be distinguished from the facsimile edition of October 7, 1013, by the gilt rectangular border on all but last page; the later printing (presented to the school children of Indianapolis by Mr. Riley in appreciation of their poetry shower and exercises on his birthday) has green borders in place of gilt, and other differences. -- The 1913 facsimile contains a 4-line, untitled greeting which was later collected in the Biographical Edition, Vol. 5, under the title, 'To the Children'." This copy that we are selling is the 1913 edition with the green border and the 4-line poem at the front. Very rare! On the rear is pencilled "Presented to Mary Marguerite Dougan by James W. Riely, August 1, 1914." ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 7 pages .
