About This Item
London: Putnam, 1937. First Edition. Hard Cover. First UK Edition. 416 pages. Superbly rebound by the world-renowned Bayntun-Riviere of Bath. Sumptuously re-bound in full red morocco with all edges gilt, 5 raised bands to the spine with title blocked in gold in panel 2 and author's name blocked in gold in panel 3;decorative chiyogami end-papers; and single-line gilt border to both the front and back boards. What differentiates this copy from the norm - apart from the beautiful binding - is how clean the interior pages are. An OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE. No inscriptions. Becoming very scarce indeed. It would grace any collection of modern first editions. Looks very smart in its custom-made acetate wrapper. Photographs/scans available upon request.
Synopsis
Out of Africa is a memoir by Isak Dinesen, a nom de plume used by the Danish author Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke. The book, first published in 1937, recounts events of the seventeen years when Blixen made her home in Kenya, then British East Africa. The book is a lyrical meditation on Blixen’s life on her coffee plantation, as well as a tribute to some of the people who touched her life there. It is also a vivid snapshot of African colonial life in the last decades of the British Empire.
