London: George Bell and Sons, 1882. New Edition: First & Second Series. Half leather and marbled boards. Near Fine/None. Steel engravings. Two volumes, small 8vos (7 1/4" x 4 5/8"), rebound in half plum-colored calf and green marbled boards with gold pin-striped borders and gold lettering on spines, illustrated with two engraved frontispieces & vignette title pages plus about 10 in-text full-page B&W engravings, marbled endpapers, 536 & 538 pages. Weighs 2 lbs 9 oz. This famous series of about 100 English rural sketches by "Miss" Mary Mitford (1787 - 1855), author and dramatist, first appeared in The Lady's Magazine and were published in the 1820's and 30's. They were based on her life in the hamlet of Three Mile Cross near Reading in Berkshire. A charming series of rural sketches in a superb two-volume half leather and marbled boards edition. Tight text blocks with clean pages (a spot near the edge of a page at the end of volume II with an occasional crease to a few pages). Minor rubbing to edges and corners.
