Our Sister Republic is his first travelogue. The second, A La California: Sketches of the Golden State (1873) was published posthumously after his death in 1872. "In a land where nature has lavished all her wealth with tropical prodigality, where the scenery is grand and beautiful beyond description, and every step is over historic ground, and amid scenes around which romance of centuries has accumulated, I could not fail to see much to interest the reader and make the story of such a journey worthy of perusal.
