The first edition of American journalist Samuel Bowles's illustrated account of his 1860s travels to explore the Western United States. The first edition of this work.Illustrated with a frontispiece and thirteen engraved plates. Collated, complete.Bowles, the publisher and editor of the Springfield Republican, travelled across the North American continent in the summers of 1865 and 1866, to explore the Western United States.He describes the lives of Mormons and Native Americans, with accounts of of the pacific railroad, Sierra Nevada, and interior basin. Rebacked in a full calf binding, with back strip laid down, and boards restored. Externally, very smart, with a touch of light rubbing to back strip head. Hinges reinforced. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to title page and frontispiece, with tide mark to fore edge of frontispiece. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with instances of concentrated spotting to plates, and leaves surrounding them. Very Good
