First (SD) edition. Burgundy blind-stamped cloth, gilt topboard decoration with period applied flower applique, gilt stamped spine "The Broad Church", brown eps. Inscribed by "Mr. & Mrs. R. Roberts, Presented by the author, Boston Jan. 1, 1882". Cr.8vo. pp. [ii] blank, viii, [2] plate, 9-116, [2] blank. VG. Sunned spine, foxing starting. Twelve unusual articles of faith proposed for the "Broad Church". Not much is known about the author other than through his other two publications: "Education, or the coming man" (Boston: Colby & Rich) 1884 and "Christian socialism : a paper read at the educational rooms, no. 98 Boylston Street, Boston, December 28th, 1890"..
