About This Item

[Japanese-American] [442nd] [Hawaii] [WWII] Rare WW.II Photo book with illustrations documenting the detailed history of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, th 100th Infantry Battalion and the interpreters. Hawaii's Own: Picture Story of 442nd Regiment, 100th Battalion and Interpreters. Honolulu: T.H. Publishing, 1946. First Edition softcover. 103 pages. Measures 9" x 12". The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated Japanese American unit, is remembered today for its brave actions in World War II, which, despite the odds, became the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US military. The 100th Infantry Battalion, initially made up almost entirely of Japanese Americans from Hawaii already in the army prior to World War II, represented the first group of Japanese Americans to see combat during World War II. The interpreters, of the Nisei in the MIS, translated the captured documents referred to as the "Z Plan," which outlined the Japanese plans for counterattack in the Southwest Pacific in 1944. By the war's end Nisei linguists had translated an astounding 20.5 million pages of documents. This book chronicles all three of the groups and their history, bravery, campaigns and individuals through text by Lawrence Nakatsuka, illustrations by Soji Morisawa and 69 printed photographs throughout. These photos range from men of the 442nd Regiment marching for the last time before their inactivation on BVeterans Day in 1946 in Waikiki to shots of Cassino under attack as the 100th Infantry Battalion distinguished themselves as fierce fighters, taking down a Nazi observation post. Other photos range from combat shots to other jobs and tasks along with several parades and honors bestowed upon them in Hawaii. An introduction by the Editor of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reads: "It is sufficient to say that the Americans of Japanese ancestry in Hawaii early and consistently proved their loyalty, and their readiness to take their places with Americans of every other race, color and degree from the firing line to the home front. Hawaii's own deals chiefly with the story of these Americans of Japanese blood the "Nisei" a term that came, in the war years, to be known throughout the United States. It deals with their training, their campaigns, their four shining years of military history." Cover is vibrant and features an illustrated portrait of a Japanese-American soldier with an American flag backdrop. Binding is tight but spine is worn. Cover is vibrant and pages are clean. Overall, a rare book in very good condition.
