About This Item

Fine Arts Services Inc.. A unique item. Offered are three items: a typed and signed letter from Tamara B. Thomas, President of Fine Arts Services Inc., dated March 27, 1989 to artist David Hockney; a hand-written note she added and paper-clipped to the typed letter (dated "3/27"); and a blueprint drawing of the proposed project. The lengthy letter reads in short part: "Enclosed is some visual information [the blueprint] on a new project in Chicago [Savings of America, 120 N. La Salle]. It is a Helmut Jahn designed building in a prime downtown location - My client wishes to commission an important artist to design the 27' x 54' radiused panel above the entry door to the building (see drawing). It is possible that a mural might be painted in this space, but the feeling is that a mosaic would be the richest, most permanent and most practical medium to withstand Chicago's climate. The client is willing to spend up to $1,000,000 for this work [with "hard costs" of execution, shipping and installation estimated between $250,000 and $400,000]. You are our first choice for this project and we would be delighted if you were interested." The text of the handwritten note to the letter reads in full: "To: Whomever opens this (Karen?) - If DH is out of town or unable to consider this situation until a later date, please [underlined] let us know. If we receive no response at all by April 10 we willl conclude DH has seen this & has no interest. Many thanks - Tamara Th". The large blueprint drawing shows the Savings of America building with especial focus on where the mosaic panel would be located. [The artist who ultimately designed the panel, entitled "Flight of Daedalus and Icarus," was Roger Brown]. Lacks original mailing envelope. . Fine. Paper Ephemera. 1st Edition. 1989.
