Sydney.: The Falk Studios - 496 George Street,. Original black & white photograph mounted on original board of the Falk Studios Sydney 24.8 x 19.7cm, the photograph measures 20 x 14.8cm. The opening of the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia took place in the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne on 9 May 1901. Prince George, Duke of Cornwall and York (later King George V), officiated in the name of the King. The city was decorated with a series of grand arches to celebrate the momentous occasion and the visit of the royal duke and duchess.
Falk Studios was established by Melbourne-born photographer H. Walter Barnett in George Street, Sydney in 1885. Barnett started his career in Stewart's portrait studio in Melbourne, opened his own rooms in Hobart and worked in the USA and London before returning to Sydney to set up his business there. In 1888 he opened a second Sydney studio, in Pitt Street, and in 1895 Falk Studios opened in Melbourne, managed by Barnett's sister Phoebe and brother Charles. Barnett moved to London to set up a studio in 1898, but Falk Studios continued to operate into the late 1930s. .
