[Original Manuscript Sketchbook of the H.M.S. Challenger Expedition, 1872-1874]

by [SHEPHARD, Benjamin]

  • Used
1873. Oblong quarto sketchbook. (9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches). Thirty-six leaves, including illustrated titlepage and thirty-five ink and watercolor illustrations, all but titlepage in full color. Original printed wrappers, backed in later tape. Inscribed, "William Gurling. H.M.S. Challenger. Sydney. Australia," on front wrapper verso. Covers worn. Some minor soiling internally, but overall clean, bright, and in very good condition, with most tissue guards remaining. The remarkable original watercolor sketchbook of Benjamin Shephard from the historic scientific voyage of the H.M.S. Challenger. In 1968, J. Welles Henderson, collector, historian, and founder of the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, discovered the sketchbook in an antique shop in Boston. He purchased the volume and soon showed it to Harris B. Stewart, an oceanographer and member of the Maritime Museum's Underwater Advisory Board, who agreed that the drawings added "a delightful artistic postscript to the volumes already written about what is still considered the greatest of all oceanographic expeditions" (Stewart and Henderson, p.[3]). In 1972, on the centennial of the Challenger's launch, the Philadelphia Maritime Museum published a facsimile volume of the sketchbook, with an introduction and detailed commentary by Stewart and Henderson accompanying each plate. During their research on the sketchbook, Henderson and Stewart discovered that Benjamin Shephard was a cooper who served during the entire voyage of the H.M.S. Challenger from November 1872 to May 1876. Shephard was born at Brixton in Surrey in 1841, entered the navy in 1862, and died in Australia from tuberculosis in 1874 at the age of 45. "Evidently," Handerson and Stewart write, "he found work not particularly to his liking, as he was promoted and demoted several times during his 25-year career." He paid significant attention to his Challenger sketchbook, however, creating a series of "magnificently done" watercolors that show the work of a skilled and observant amateur. The sketches are all approximately 6 x 9¾ inches, each featuring a view of the ship and framed with a caption-bearing garter. Following the attractive pictorial titlepage, they begin with a fanciful scene of the Challenger dredging the sea floor, with mermaids guiding the net below and bestowing it with shells and an old anchor. Stewart and Henderson note that like the sailors on most oceanographic expeditions, "those aboard the H.M.S. Challenger, although intrigued by the work of the scientists, were more interested in the ports which punctuated the long periods of observations at sea. Thus Shephard, with few exceptions, concentrated on painting not the scientific work at sea but rather the Challenger at her various ports of call." Twenty-five of the watercolors are port or other coastal views, covering Madeira, St. Thomas, Bermuda, Halifax, St. Michael's, St. Vincent, St. Paul's Rocks, Fernando Noronha, Tristan de Cunha, Capetown, Prince Edward Island, Crozet Island, Kerguelen Island, and McDonald Island. Many of these depict other ships and boats, with forts, towns, and the occasional lighthouse in the background. Non-coastal scenes include one of a violent storm in the Gulf of Florida, a particularly attractive view of the ship at full sail "on her way to St. Paul's Rocks," and six sketches of the Challenger sailing, dredging, and firing guns among the Antarctic icebergs. A beautiful and important visual record of what Howgego has called "the most detailed and extensive examination of the world's oceans in the history of exploration. Howgego N5; [Benjamin Shephard]: Challenger Sketchbook B. Shephard's Sketchbook of the H.M.S. Challenger Expedition 1872-1874 Prepared and Edited for Publication by Harris B. Stewart, Jr. and J. Welles Henderson (Philadelphia: Philadelphia Maritime Museum, 1972).

Leaves A5 & A6 with a small, expert paper repair in lower margin, not affecting text. Twentieth century morocco bound to contemporary style, tooled and ruled in gilt, spine richly gilt Drake's Circumnavigation. The first French edition of Drake's circumnavigation, translated from the account inserted in the 1589 edition of Hakluyt's Principal Navigations. The text is traditionally attributed to Francis Pretty, though it is more likely that the information was compiled by Richard Hakluyt himself from three or more sources (see Wagner, Drake's Voyage). Wagner notes that the additional information found in this French edition but not in Hakluyt is "small but significant" and calls this "the most complete translation of all." Drake's circumnavigation was one of the most important events in maritime history, and this account must have been eagerly read by the French, who would not… Read More

Paris, 1830. Copper engraving. Very good condition, apart from the title-area having been trimmed away. A fine plate from 'Description de l'Egypte', the seminal publication by the French government detailing the results of the Napoleon's pioneering military and scientific expedition to Egypt (1798-1801) and the first comprehensive illustrated description of ancient and modern Egypt. In 1798, Napoleon embarked on his legendary expedition to Egypt with the ambition of wresting control of the region from the Turkish Empire and 'opening' the enigmatic kingdom to the West. Conquering Egypt, the geographical centerpoint in the axis of trade between Europe, India and the East, was an integral part of Bonaparte's strategic plan for global domination. Among the numerous civilians accompanying him, were the 'savants', leading French scholars, artists, scientists, engineers and technicians, whom he commissioned to compile a thorough survey of every aspect of Egypt that could later be used in planning the… Read More

[San Augustine, TX, 1863. [4]pp. Folio sheets. Three horizontal folds, some soiling and staining. Murder in Texas during the Civil War. A detailed, closely-written report concerning the testimony of three suspects in the murder of Richard E. Waterhouse in San Augustine, Texas in 1863. Waterhouse was a Seminole War and Mexican-American War veteran who ascended to the rank of colonel in Tennessee before moving his family to East Texas in 1849, where he opened a general store and speculated in real estate. In 1859, Waterhouse was elected to the Texas State Legislature as the representative from San Augustine County. He was one of the wealthy citizens of the town, a fact that seemed to be widely known, and ultimately fatal for the colonel. On the night of Dec. 31, 1863, his store was robbed and Waterhouse was murdered after sustaining a sharp blow to the head from a "hand axe or hatchet." This document is a detailed summation of the events surrounding the robbery and murder of Colonel Waterhouse, naming… Read More

Antigua, West Indies, 1850. Watercolour on paper, inscribed lower left and lower right. Sheet size: 9 7/8 x 13 7/8 inches. Excellent panoramic view from the Monks' Hill Fort looking south east down across Falmouth Harbour, English Harbor and out across the Caribbean. According to William R. O'Byrne's A Naval Biographical Dictionary (London: 1849) Vol. 1, p.70, Bellairs joined the Navy in 1809 and made Lieutenant in 1819. From 1842 he served as Admiralty Agent on board a 'contract Mail steam-vessel'. He evidently travelled widely: the National Maritime Museum in London holds two of his West Indian drawings, the National Library of Australia a watercolour of a scene in Panama, and a collection of his drawings of the Far East were sold in 1982. As the present drawing shows he was clearly gifted, and more than a match for many of the professional artists working at the time. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West… Read More

Description:
1598. Engraved portrait, approximately 4 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches. An excellent, sharp, crisp impression. Fine. In a blue half morocco slipcase. The very rare Crispin van de Passe portrait of Drake. This rare portrait of Drake by Crispin van de Passe comes from an early volume of engraved portraits, Effigies Regum Ac Principum, Eorum Scillicet (Cologne, 1598). Drake, who circumnavigated the globe in 1577-1580, appears under the title "most noble English knight, very experienced in all things nautical and military." "The portrait of Drake is of especial interest: it is a close copy of the smaller Hondius Drake portrait which in its first state exists in only two copies (Royal Geographical Society, and Huntington Library). It depicts him in bust, with a shield, and with a two-hemisphere terrestrial map displaying the track of his circumnavigation" - Kraus. De Passe's stylized monograph appears near the bottom of the portrait. Epigrammatic verses in Latin by Matthias Quad appear beneath the portrait. Kraus,… Read More

[Birmingham, England, late 18th century]. Oblong quarto. (7 1/2 x 11 inches). 113 engraved plates, on laid paper, priced throughout in manuscript. Later calf backed marbled paper covered boards, flat spine ruled and lettered in gilt. A rarely encountered pattern book or trade catalogue of 18th century English furniture hardware, including drawer pulls, keyholes, hinges, locks, castors, bolts and more. By 1770, over thirty different brass foundries operated in Birmingham, England, making it the epicenter of furniture hardware design in the last quarter of the 18th century. At roughly the same period, trade catalogues, like the present, began to be issued by both furniture and hardware makers alike. In all, over 500 designs are shown on the 113 consecutively numbered plates, from rather simple hinges to incredibly ornate pulls. Although no engravers' names are identified, it has been suggested that the foundries themselves produced such plates, utilizing the talents of their own craftsmen, who by… Read More

Provenance: Captain William Henry Shippard. An early, original watercolour by George Catlin. The present watercolour attributed by provenance to George Catlin depicts a fire at a brewery in Buffalo just days before the celebration of the opening of the Erie Canal. The watercolour was at one time part of an album assembled by Captain William Henry Shippard, who Catlin describes in his Notes of Eight Years Travels and Residence in Europe, as "my best of friends." Shippard, an English army officer, worked on Catlin's behalf in the 1840s in the London exhibition and attempted sale of his collection, and further assisted in Catlin's research as a reader at the British Museum. Chillicothe and Zanesville, 1816. Fourteen volumes, publication details and pagination provided in the listing below. Uniform half calf and marbled boards, leather labels. Small ink library stamps and embossed blind-stamps and occasional ink ownership inscriptions on titlepages. Some contemporary ink marginalia, a handful of leaves trimmed close, a few small tape repairs or reinforcements. A significant run of the laws of the State of Ohio from the first session of the General Assembly to the fourteenth of 1816, covering the crucial years of 1812-15 when Ohio was the Western theater of the War of 1812. The impact of the war can be seen right away in the 1812 session laws: the very first act provides "blankets for the Ohio militia, now in the service of the United States." Later in this session, the assembly passed an act "for the encouragement of Volunteers in the North Western Army of the United States" after the "lamentable disaster, which has happened to that part of the North Western Army of… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
