About This Item

1950. Original Artwork. Matted and framed under glass. Drawing Fine/Frame a Trifle Worn. Windsor Utley. Original charcoal on paper depicting an Italian hill town amid rolling hills. Paper measures 10.5 x 15.75 inches; frame measures 20 x 25.5 inches. Mounted on a board and centered on mat, under glass with a prosaic wood frame. The label mounted on the back of the frame indicates the work was purchased from the artist's gallery, Utley's, on Seattle's First Avenue. Frame with light wear, else Fine. Although undated, "Italian Hill Town" is informed by Utley's 1951-'52 tenure in Siena, where he studied with sculptor-painter Bruno Buracchini. The label for Utley's Gallery, which opened in 1966, presents Punchenello, the ill-tempered figure from commedia del'arte theater.

Today, the Utley painting most recognized by Seattleites is "Tribute to Beethoven," since 1988 a 16.5-foot mural on permanent exhibit in the main lobby of the University of Washington's Meany Theater. Included with the work is a substantial octavo catalog of Utley works, some-40 pp., issued by the Otto Seligman Gallery. The catalog features a chronology, an essay on Utley by Seligman, along with photos of him, and reproductions of many works. Indeed, a folding card invites customers to view "Tribute to Beethoven" from May-June 1964. The invitation features a color reproduction of the mural.
