About This Item
First Edition. Photograph. Fine. An original black and white photograph, signed by Bristol on the mat "Horace Bristol '4" Image measures 7 x 8.75 inches, overall approx 17.25 x 21.25 inches matted and framed under glass, wood frame painted black (with a few rubs and nicks). A stunning image, close-up head shot, of a serious O'Neill (1888-1953), who was an Irish American playwright and Nobel laureate in Literature, and one of the first to introduce into American drama techniques of realism earlier associated with Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, and Swedish playwright August Strindberg. His best known plays include: Anna Christie (Pulitzer Prize 1922), Desire Under the Elms (1924), Strange Interlude (Pulitzer Prize 1928), Mourning Becomes Electra (1931), and his only well-known comedy Ah Wilderness. In 1936 he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Horace Bristol, 1909-1997, was a giant of photo-journalism, a man whose images of Depression-era despair in the United States, wartime heroism in the Pacific and postwar poverty and hope in rural Korea have been ranked with the great pictures of the century.
