About This Item

London: Macmillan And Co., Limited, 1915. Second Edition, later printing. Signed presentation by Oliver's wife on the front endpaper: "To Zara Gross from the author's wife K.A.O. Edgerston. Jedburgh- Whit Monday, 1958." Frederick Scott Oliver [1864-1934] was a prominent Scottish political writer and businessman who advocated tariff reform and imperial union for the British Empire. He played an important role in the Round Table movement, collaborated in the downfall of Prime Minister H. H. Asquith's wartime government and its replacement by David Lloyd George in 1916, and pressed for "home rule all round" to resolve the political conflict between Britain and Irish nationalists. "K.A.O." is his wife, Katharine Augusta Oliver. In 1915, Oliver bought the Edgerston Estate in Jedburgh where they lived. The estate was sold in 1980. Tall 8vo., blue cloth with paper title label on spine (as issued); 437 pages, plus two-page catalogue. Top edge of signatures are uncut so an unread copy. Very Good (minor wear covers & very edge of spine label, contents clean & tight with bit of browning to endpapers; pages uncut along top edge).
