About This Item
Havniae: Literis Justini Hog, Universit, 1697 A very good copy of the 1st edition in recent full calf binding. Thormodus Torfaeus (1636-1719) was educated at the University in Copenhagen, and became Royal Antiquary of Iceland and Royal Historian of the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway. This was his second work, published in 1697, and concerns the activity of the Vikings in Orkney - particularly the material of the Orkneyinga Saga. The binding is in near fine condition and has raised bands and gilt titles to spine. The endpapers are recent and marbled, with an old bookplate of J A Maconochie to the front pastedown, and a newer bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson (a noted Orcadian) to the fep. 2 new blanks have been added front and rear. Contents: original blank with latin note to top; rubricated title page with printer's device (small paper repair to verso); note of authority; dedication 5pp; Praefatio ad Lectorum 7pp; verses 2pp; Libri I pp 1-155 (some ink notes - generally dates in margins, some ink marks p 55, and ink blot bottom margin p 117); blank; Libri II pp 157-190; Exemple Contract Matrimon pp 191-205; Libri III pp 207-228; index 10pp; old blank. Text with decorative headpieces, tailpieces and initial capitals for each section. Contents with light toning and occasional mottling, but in good condition.

About E C Books
E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
