Dresden: Cigarettenfabrik Orami, 1933. First edition. Oblong folio (11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches). Title and plate list plus 12 leaves bearing 142 of 144 original miniature photographs (cigarette cards) of contemporary dancers popular in Germany at the time. Each photograph identified in the plate. Publisher's gilt lettered brown wrappers. Some wear at corners but a very good copy. In 1933, Hitler was gaining popularity but the Weimar culture was still powerful. A partial list of the dancers shown herein; Ruth Anselm (partially nude; a member of the Jewish Kulturbund in Berlin; she survived Hitler's assault); Kate Richter; Usa Koch (an early Yoga practitioner); Max Terpis (choreographer at the Berlin State Opera for 6 years); Jonny Ahemm; Nini Theilade (Danish modern dancer who appeared in Max Reinhard's Hollywood film A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1935); Niddy Impekoven; Rudolph Kolling; Iva Langentels; Harald Kreutzberg (who partnered with American ballerina Ruth Page in the 30s); Lilo Ralph; Gret Palucca (who founded her own dance school that was shut down by the Nazis as she was Jewish; went on to become founding member of East German Academy of Arts) etc.
