London: The Leadenhall Press, 1891. 1891 Edition. VERY GOOD. Undated but an early, possibly first, printing. Title page names The Leadenhall Press in London as well as Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd., and Scribner & Welford in New York. Scribner and Welford ceased to exist in 1891 (it became Charles Scribner's Sons). Preface by E. Walthamstow is dated 1891. A clean, complete copy bound in black cloth hardcover, gilt titled on spine and front cover. The only markings to the book is a "17D" penned to front free endpaper and a black crossout on reverse side of same endpaper. Light toning to pages, top edge dust stained, bottom page edges rough cut or untrimmed. There are a few small corner creases and short edge tears to a couple of leaves: text pages otherwise crisp and fine. The catalog is printed on different paper than the text; it has toned a bit more and there are a few small edge chips. Bottom page edges rough cut or untrimmed. Cover is black silk cloth is clean, moderately rubbed along edges and hinges. Corners lightly bumped and there is a bit of board showing at bottom corner tips. Spine gilt is faded and difficult to read. Hinges are tender and a bit loose but intact. There is some looseness between signatures but no loose or pulled pages and the book-block is unbroken. Spine and boards are straight. Clues to the printing date of this copy might be found in the 14-page catalog "Extracts from The Leadenhall Press Book List" which appears at the end of the book. I found no titles with publishing dates later than 1891 other than a listing for "The Dawn of the Twentieth Century." The ad gives a publication date of January 1901 but this may be "advance publicity"- the same ad appears in the 1890/91 edition of "A Handbook of London Bankers" another title published by Leadenhall. (I find no evidence that "The Dawn" ever saw the light of day, it may have been a spoof.) The final page has an amusing full-page ad for "The Author's Hairless Paper Pad"- identically designed ads for the pad appear at least as early as 1890. Early copies of this book are extremely scarce. 5 x 7-3/4"; xxxii + 375 text pages, plus 14 advertising pages.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Not Issued. 8vo.

Description:
1696 Hebrew Republic Judaism Judaica Republican Semitism Cunaeus + Angels Occult

Petrus Cunaeus was an early 17th-century Dutch scholar whose 'Hebrew Republic' is considered, according to Tuck, "the most powerful statement of republican theory in the early years of the Dutch Republic."(Tuck, 169)
"De Republica Hebraeorum" describes ancient Hebrew kingdoms and portrays it as the model of republican governments. This book was highly influential on the formation of the Dutch Republic, even though Cunaeus foresaw the Dutch government falling just as Rome did. Ultimately, Cunaeus sought for the book to instill tolerance toward 17th-century Jews through the publication of 'Republica.'
This book is curiously bound with Sebastian Schmidt's 'Succinctae & Solidae' – an extremely rare occult work and commentary on angels from the Bible.

1855 Ingoldsby Legends Occult Esoteric Tenniel Leech Cruikshank Illustrated 3v

"ABRACADABRA!"

A fine 1855 printing of the famous "Ingoldsby
Legends." This collection of myths, ghost stories, and poetry was written by R.H. Barham, who is better known by his penname, Thomas Ingoldsby. These legends were extremely popular from their inception in 1837, but this edition was illustrated with George Cruikshank illustrations! While this collection is somewhat less popular today than it was in the 19th-century, it does include aspects that are still recognizable – the magic command "Abracadabra" and a version of the children's song Bingo!

This 1855 'three-series' edition includes illustrations by George Cruikshank, John Leech, and John Tenniel.

1884 1ed New England Legends Folk Lore Witchcraft Witches Ghosts Occults Drake

'A Book of New England Legends' is a collection of folk lore in prose and poetry from the beginning of the settlement of New England to the late 19th century. Drake believed that story could communicate something about society that science could not, and so, he collected these stories from all over New England to further illustrate the society and culture of New England. His book is divided up into geographical locations giving a short description of the area to set the scene for the poetry and prose of each area.
This 1884 edition includes 112 illustrations by F.T. Merrill.

Description:
1863 GHOSTS 1ed Discovery Ghouls Occult Spirits George Cruikshank Caricature Art
George Cruikshank was one of the most prolific book illustrators of 19th-century England. His caricature illustrations most famously appeared in some of the works of Charles Dickens. He regularly depicted English life and satirized politics and social customs, especially slavery and abolitionist reforms. Being disturbed by the American spiritualist and séance fad going around he applied his satire to the idea of ghosts claiming that clearly it was all a hoax as ghosts always appear clothed and for that to be true clothes would have to be a part of the soul, which can only be absurd.

This 1863 first edition includes 9 black and white woodcuts of varying sizes throughout!

Description:
1694 Macrobius Saturnalia Dream Scipio Occult Pagan Philosophy Astronomy Vellum

"Good laws are produced by bad actions."
– Macrobius, Saturnalia

Macrobius was a 5th-century Roman scholar known for his works of Platonism during the Middle Ages. His most well-known and remembered works are 'Somnium Sciponis', or 'Commentary on Cicero's Dream of Scipio' and 'Saturnalia' which is a collection of Roman religious anecdotes and historical sketches.

'Commentary on Dream of Scipio' was the most widely cited and referenced book in the Middle Ages. It is important for giving astronomical distances – one of the earliest estimations of the diameter of the sun. His anti-Christian approach to philosophy was evident in 'Dream' as he sought to describe Creation in a stoic pseudo-scientific manner. According to Shirley,
"His Neo-platonic commentary on Cicero includes, among many references to the pseudo-sciences, a geographic concept which is different from that of Ptolemy. The inhabited world north of the… Read More

'Cruel Effects of Diabolic Possession' is a famous work on the accused demon possession of Ursuline nuns, now known as the Loudon Possessions. Jean Mignon, the nun's confessor, made a plan for the nuns to fake being possessed and denounce Urbain Grandier, who was accused of summoning evil spirits.

Nicolas Aubin's account of this 17th-century event covers the topics of witch burning at the stake, exorcisms, torture, accusation of sorcery, and flagellation.

Description:
binding is very clean- just a touch of edgewear/shelfwear. They used a two tone quarter green cloth over gray cloth and the green portion still is glossy. Internals very clean ( not even any pricing marks in pencil) though there is a paper clip indentation at the lower edge affecting the title, onwards for 20 pages. Unclipped wrapper has only some rubbing but I detect no tears, creases or chips. The paper is wonderful; it strikes me as feeling and looking like "linen" (not your business/office grade) but I am by no means an expert on paper. This US Stackpole Edition omits 8 plates which are in the UK Allen & Unwin volume. Well-preserved, excellent copy.

Clipped(err..!) still glossy wrapper is the same- perhaps just a hint of rubbing/dust-dulling but so minor- hey, let's not ruin the fun, eh? This is The One.
