A collection of essays on James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Ranier Maria Rilke, Henry James, Joseph Conrad, Marcel Proust, and the Greek poet Demetrios Capetanakis, and the war poets Alen Lewis, Wilfred Owen and Edward Thomas as well as a final essay on the poet in the modern world. Lehmann was himself a poet and an author, from a family of writers (his sister was novelist Rosamund Lehmann), publisher, founder of "New Writing" and the author of biographies of Edith Sitwell and Virginia Woolf, among other things. 128 pp.
