About This Item
First and only edition. Small quarto 24x17 cm., original pictorial wrappers, 48 pp. Very small edition, under 150. The Title translates as Day and Night, or Around the Clock. Woodcut cover and five full-page woodcuts by Aleksander Bergmann, the lifelong pseudonym of Aleksander Vardi (1901-1983). Vardi achieved renown in Estonia for his Impressionist and color-saturated landscapes in a style he embarked on by 1928. The work he did for this book was executed during his studies in Tartu at the Pallas Art Institute and was part of an experimental phase. He used the Bergmann pseudo for his book illustrations. These were always an opportunity for him to explore other approaches. Here he employs a highly original cubo-expressionism. Author Julius Oengo (Öngo, 1901-1941) was a poet and widely published author of children's books. He and his wife were captured in the Soviet invasion following the Ribbentropp Pact and disappeared, presumably liquidated. OCLC locates two worldwide holdings (Columbia, BL). This copy near fine, owner signature on title.
