Vignetted head-and-shoulders portrait of John Humphrey Noyes (1811-1886), founder of the Oneida Community, as a mature man. J. C. Buttre (1821-1893) was a prolific line engraver, based in New York from 1841 (Stauffer, American Engravers I, p. 38-9). Wallingford, CT: Wallingford Printing Company, [n.d. but ca. 1876]. First Edition. First printing. Octavo (20cm). Stab-sewn pamphlet with title cover; 16pp. Minor dirt to edges, else Very Good. Letters documenting struggles with epidemics in the Wallingford Community, a branch of the Oneida Community with a printing press. The community debated removing from Wallingford, but remained to maintain their printing operation, and fought the disease by acquiring a Turkish bath. The letters claim that the community's spiritual struggle "substantially expelled the spiritual virus (ignorantly called malaria)" (p.16). NOT IN WELLS; NOT IN DARE.
