About This Item
City Lights, San Francisco. 1961. 1st. edn. Paperback. Single sheet stiff paper folded four times to make 4to shape. VG but browning with v. slight creasing. "There are not one thousend words here. The author has Ieft room for a happier ending, in case the relentless hostility of government and press in the U.S. should somehow not triumph in the end. The poem in its present form was first read by Ferlinghetti at a rally in San Francisco one week before the end of the Eisenhower Era." Ironical considering what Kennedy did in the Bay of Pigs, this item is v. scarce because of its near ephemeral nature. A scarce Ferlinghetti item and unusually for its provenance, unsigned. From the collection of Arlie Panting, who was sometime agent for City Lights in the UK and a painter of some respect though not greatly known.
