About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1942. First edition (stated). Fine in very good jacket.. First edition of one of White's greatest and most important books, including much of White's best essays like "Once More to the Lake." "No one has written more consistently graceful, thoughtful essays in twentieth-century American language than White" (Phillip Lopate, quoted in Root 2) ONE MAN'S MEAT was the book that caused HERALD TRIBUTE reviewer Irwin Edman to famously declare White, "one of our finest essayists, perhaps our only one" (quoted in Root 2). An unusually scarce book in its first edition (and uncommon even in later printings), issued during wartime production and consequently difficult to find in any kind of collectible condition. 8'' x 5.5''. Original green cloth. In original unclipped ($2.50 pictorial dust jacket. xvi, 346 pages. Book is sharp and bright with just trace shelfwear at spine tips and a bit of shelf-soil to top edge of text block. Jacket with two shallow chips and faint dampstaining (visible mainly from reverse, not affecting book). Scarce thus.
