Two trivial flaws, (1) bkplt, (2) upper board with very slight bow. Stated 1st. 8vo, 278pp. . Red lettered gray cloth spine. Marble patterned red cloth boards. Immaculate book in & out. Red stained text block top edge bright & clean as new. Gray DJ with colorful depiction of pick ax swinging miner. DJ with two 1/4" closed tears & few tips with 1/8" wear chips. At one point the DJ had been flattened and then folded in quarters. .

Red and gold marbled boards, buckram spine lettered in matching red. A very fine, bright and crisp copy in printed and pictorial dust jacket (spine ends with tiny chips, but otherwise a super jacket!) "The letters and journal of a keen-eyed forty-niner" (Wheat). "Christman, trained as a printer in the Village Record office of West Chester, Pennsylvania, penned one of the most descriptive journals of a sea voyage and the Southern Mines" (Kurutz). Christman spent 222 days on the ship Europe, and arrived in San Francisco in February of 1850. He worked laboriously but unsuccessfully in the Mariposa mines and eventually returned to the newspaper business in Stockton and Sonora. In 1852 he returned home via Panama. [Kurutz: 128; Wheat: 38]. Excellent and becoming quite scarce, most especially in this condition..
