Sir Joseph Carruthers was a member of the NSW Parliament for 45 years and premier from 1904 to 1907. Many of his reforms are so ingrained in our daily lives that we take them for granted. He was a champion of the Australian worker and an early environmentalist but his most enduring accomplishment was his Federation role (as the chosen successor of Sir Henry Parkes who died before Federation was achieved).
