Gass' debut novel, presented in the original unclipped dust wrapper. First Edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. This is the first novel from Gass, which follows a set of characters in a small town in rural Ohio during the 1890s. A man named Brackett Omensetter comes to town, and confronts the 'crazed' Reverend Jethro Furber, resulting in strong reactions from the community.William Howard Gass (1924-2017) was an American novelist, critic, and philosophy professor. He wrote multiple novels, short stories, and essays, some of which won the NAtional Book Critics Circle Award, as well as the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism. With a change of address card loosely inserted to text, belonging to prior owner Deborah Rogers (1938-2014), a British literary agent. Rogers represented popular writers such as A. S. Byatt, Ian McEwan, Angela Carter, and Salman Rushdie. She offered Rushdie her second home as a refuge from the fatwa imposed by Khomeini, and he lived there for almost a decade.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with just a bit of bumping to the extremities and spine, with light fading to the top edge of boards. Dust wrapper is very smart, with a bit of edge wear to the wraps, and light fading to the spine region. The odd spot to the reverse of wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Near Fine
