About This Item

Chicago: Shober & Carqueville Litho Co., 1889., 1889. First edition. First edition. 12mo. [24] pp. Alternating color illustrated lithographs, alternating burgundy-colored and green ink illustrations throughout. Blue softcovers, with burgundy-colored illustrated lithograph on front and rear covers. Stapled and punch sewn at upper fore-edge with black thread. A beautifully printed and fascinating advertising alphabet printed and distributed by the Oliver Chilled Plow Works as a novelty promoting the values and importance of the authentic Oliver Plows. "A is America the land of real worth ... And like the Oliver Plow Works ... The greatest on Earth." "B stands for beauty and all must concede ... That for elegance, Oliver Plows take the lead." "J ... James Oliver ... The man who first made the Chilled Metal Plow and established the trade." K stands for Kansas, a state in the west ... where Oliver's Steel Plows are known as the best." Written just four years after the ruinous labor riots against Oliver in 1885, and as the company was fast expanding around the world, this piece reinforces the greatness and importance of Oliver Chilled Plows. Shober & Carqueville was originally established in Chicago by the merger of Charles Shober's firm with Chicago Lithographing Company (Louis Kurtz & Edward Carqueville) in 1876. The company printed sheet music, posters, pictorial maps, trade cards, and advertising novelties. Light soiling to wrappers along with crease to bottom front corner, 1/2" closed tear to rear wrapper and with light wear to extremities and spine. Very good.
