About This Item

London: G Bell and Sons Ltd, 1926. Presentation copy inscribed by Bragg on the front flyleaf: 'Peter Duffield with best wishes from W.H.B.' Peter Duffield's signed bookplate appears opposite. The book is in near fine condition with gilt decoration to the brick-red boards. Internally occasional browning but an excellent copy of the book which traces the technical side of: The trade of the Sailor; The trade of the Smith; The trade of the Weaver; The trade of the Dyer; The trade of the Potter; The trade of the Miner. xii, 266, 41 half-tone photographic plates. The jacket is nearly very good, complete but stained to the spine with consequent browning to the exterior. Bragg was a physicist, chemist and mathematician who, uniquely, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with his son in 1915. Bragg held the Cavendish chair in physics at Leeds University from 1909-1915 where he invented the X-ray spectrometer with his son Lawrence, subsequently holding posts at London University and the Royal Institution where he gave the lectures that make up this book.
