BINDING/CONDITION: from a uniformly bound series: dark brown bonded leather with gilt text, stamped decoration on the front cover, all edges gilt, ribbon place marker; Very Good+ condition.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Index. Marbled endpapers. Description: Initial caps and tailpieces by Thomson Willing; the initial cap drawings are detailed; many are portrait drawings. Includes a frontis and eight additional black and white plates by Frederic Remington. Also has a fold-out map. Inman enlisted in the Army at age 20, fought Indians in California and Oregon, fought in the Civil War, then returned to the Indian Wars, based this time in Kansas. He retired from the Army in 1872. His sketches of people and events connected with the Trail were reprinted and widely circulated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fé Railway. Financed by Buffalo Bill, Inman expanded and organized the sketches into this book. Preface by William F Cody. (Rampaging Herd, Number 1131). Includes the publisher's insert.
