About This Item

Boston, MA, USA: Houghton Mifflin Co, 1979. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 404 pages - For the large audience who relished Paul Theroux's trek through Europe and Asia in his best-selling 'The Great Railway Bazaar,' here is an equally captivating account of his travels by train in the Western hemisphere. The Old Patagonian Express, in Southern Argentina - almost at the end of the world - was the last train Theroux took. Months before, he had set out from Boston one wintry morning, boarding Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited for the first leg of his trip zigzagging through the Americas

Synopsis

Starting with a rush-hour subway ride to South Station in Boston to catch the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago, Theroux winds up on the poky, wandering Old Patagonian Express steam engine, which comes to a halt in a desolate land of cracked hills and thorn bushes. But with Theroux the view along the way is what matters: the monologuing Mr. Thornberry in Costa Rica, the bogus priest of Cali, and the blind Jorge Luis Borges, who delights in having Theroux read Robert Louis Stevenson to him.

About Train World Pty Ltd

Train World commenced business at 615 Hawthorn road East Brighton in 1973. From a cabinet in a haberdashery store, Train World grew to take over half the shop in 1974 to take over the entire store and by 1977 it had taken over the shop and the rear residence. In 1981 the shop moved across the road to 624 Hawthorn Road East Brighton. Here too the shop grew and grew. So that by 1995 it had taken over the shop, the storage room area, the staff area, the garage, the rear warehouse and finally filling the entire building. Finally on 1st July 2012 Train world moved again to 290 Bay Street Brighton - Since the 1980s the focus of Train World has been trains and model trains, nothing but trains and everything to do with trains.
