An illustrated work on the history of English plate, a helpful guide to collectors with advice of the makers and marks of antique plate. This work is an interesting history on English plate, offering advice on the care for plate, as well as information on different metals used. Also included in information of different plate makers and their marks used on their plates. This is a useful work full of valuable informative for collectors of antique plate. Written by Wilfred Joseph Cripps. Cripps was an antiquarian who studies at Trinity College, Oxford, before becoming a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He also published articles in various publications, such as 'Notes on Ancient Plate of the Merchant Taylors' Company ', 'English and Foreign Silverwork', and 'Church Plate and How to Describe it' With a frontispiece, six plates, and numerous in-text woodcut illustrations throughout. Prior owner's stamp to the recto of the frontispiece, 'A. H. Parfitt, 60 West Street, Bristol, BS2 0BL'. Collated, complete. In the original publishers cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine, causing a small tear to the head of the spine, with further light bumping to the extremities. Minor marking to the boards, with very light rubbing to the joints. Front hinge is strained. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Prior owner's stamp to the recto of the frontispiece, 'A. H. Parfitt, 60 West Street, Bristol, BS2 0BL'. Very Good Indeed
