George Washington Cable was a 19th-century American writer who is best recognized by his works on Creole life and native New Orleans culture. His best collection of works, eventually titled 'Old Creole Days', included seven short stories describing French Creole family life and the multi-cultural society of the pre-Civil War American south – racism, slavery, and immigration. These stories, which were first published in Scribner's Monthly, include:
