About This Item

London: Collins, 1979. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. The first edition of this Booker Prize-winning novel from Penelope Fitzgerald. It recalls Fitzgerald's time spent on boats in Battersea by the Thames. The novel centralises around the idea of liminality, expanding upon it to include the notion: 'liminal people,' people who do not belong to the land or the sea, but somewhere in-between. The epigraph, "che mena il vento, e che batte la pioggia, e che s'incontran con si aspre lingue" (whom the wind drives, or whom the rain beats, or those who clash with such bitter tongues) comes from Canto XI of Dante's Inferno. In a cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Some light bumping to the boards. Dustwrapper has some sunning and marks, along with a couple of chips. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with just a few instances of foxing. Very Good

Synopsis

Penelope Knox Fitzgerald is a Booker Prize-winning English novelist, poet, and essayist. Her novel, Offshore , was the recipient of the Man Booker prize in 1979. In this story a fascinating group of mild eccentrics are living on riverboats moored on the Thames in an area known as Battersea Reach. Most of the attention is focused on Nenna, a bohemian Canadian expatriate whose husband has left her and who is left veritably struggling to keep things afloat. Ms. Fitzgerald does a spectacular job of inviting the reader in to witness how each member of the group has the capacity to complicate the lives of the others. It is a fabulous comedy with a definite edge that will linger long after the story is told.
