About This Item
Square 8vo, period tree calf, morocco spine label, illustrated with folding table and 60 copper engravings, [8], 70 pp. Covers a bit worn, faint touch of old dampstain to leather, occasional foxing; very good to near fine. The present volume is a rare officer’s manual from the Napoleonic era. The translator preface states that it is “translated from a work which was published at Berlin, under the auspices of General Czetteritz, without any date; but it is supposed to have been written a few years subsequent to the piece of 1763.” In his “History of Frederick the Great” (1858-65) Carlyle presents a story of the capture of General Czetteritz and the lost of a “secret manuscript” which found its way to publication in London in 1762 as “Military Instructions by the King of Prussia.” Several editions were published under that title. The detailed copper plates depict hypothetical series of military engagements, each with accompanying letterpress legend and instructions for deploying troops.
