Beautifully rebound in 3/4 light blue cloth with 1/4 deep blue leather at spine and tips, gilt titles, gorgeous marbled endpages, each front pastedown bearing the period bookplate "Ex Libris The Chemists Club N.Y." Chemists Club blindstamp all 3 vols, small amount of informed pencil notes verso title page Vol. 1. Occasional foxing to endpages, page edges uniformly browning. Overall a quite lovely and SCARCE set of Stas' Complete Works. J.S. Stas proved that atomic weights for elements were not all multiples of 1, the atomic weight of hydrogen, disproving the theory of English physicist William Prout that all the atomic weights were multiples of that of hydrogen. He was also responsible for one of the world's first toxicology findings. He was a member of the Royal Society of London and winner of the Davy Medal, from the Royal Society, for his researches into atomic weights. . First Edition. Buckram Spine and 3/4 Cloth. Near Fine. Large Quarto.
