About This Item

London: George Manwaring, 8, King William Street, West Strand, MDCCCLXII. [1862] .. Scarce! A very good original half leather binding. 8vo. pp.20/pp.363. 8.5" x 5.5" x 1.0". Brown calf spine and corners over marbled boards. Edges and corners lightly rubbed and bumped. Spine with 5 raised bands and original dark green leather title label. Original grey-green endpapers. Light soilng and foxing to free-endpapers and preliminary leaves. Engraved frontis of the Cherbourg statue of Napoleon by 'Vincent Brooks Lith.' Otherwise clear English text throughout. ** Original review: "...William Brade - So he signs himself at the end of the preface - Is a writer of 310 pages of heavy print, but not heavy reading. he furnishes some amusement and the manner in which he lets fly at everybody who has an atom of any kind of corporate orthodoxy is pleasant enough... But who is the Sphinx? By the frontispiece, which is the Cherbourg statue of Napoleon, and by thundering interpretation of the Prophet Nahum, we suppose it to be the Emperor Napoleon the Third, who is to open the gates of the rivers (i.e. the British Channel)..." - See The Athenaeum [Augustus De Morgan], 1862 pt.1 mo.JAN-JUN. (p.428).
